Convert XLSX to AZW3
Updated Jul 2026
XLSX is a spreadsheet, and AZW3 is the Kindle book format, so converting one to the other turns your rows and columns into pages you can read on a Kindle. Open the XLSX in a converter and export it as AZW3. Doing this on your own computer means the spreadsheet never has to leave your machine.

How to convert XLSX to AZW3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the XLSX file, or a whole folder of them, that you want to read on a Kindle.
- Choose AZW3 as the output format.
- Convert. The AZW3 file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
XLSX vs AZW3: what actually changes
| XLSX | AZW3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Grid of rows and columns | Reflowable text pages, like a book |
| Formulas and calculations | Live, recalculate automatically | Gone, values become plain text |
| Multiple sheets | Yes, switchable tabs | Flattened into one reading order |
| Opens on | Excel, Sheets, Numbers | Kindle devices and Kindle apps |
| File size | Depends on data and formatting | Usually smaller, plain text compresses well |
| Editable afterward | Yes, fully | No, it's a fixed document for reading |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert XLSX to AZW3 when you want to read a report, price list, or reference table on a Kindle, say on a flight or a commute, without carrying a laptop.
Keep the XLSX if you still need to edit, sort, filter, or recalculate the data, because none of that survives the trip to AZW3.
Why not just use an online converter?
Spreadsheets often hold things you'd rather not hand to a stranger's server, client numbers, budgets, personal records. An online converter has to upload the whole file to convert it. Doing the conversion on your own computer keeps that data on your machine the entire time, and you can even switch off wifi first.
Questions
Will my formulas still work in the AZW3 file?
No. AZW3 is a reading format, not a spreadsheet, so formulas are replaced by their last calculated values and become plain text. If you need to keep working with the numbers, keep the XLSX.
What happens to multiple sheets in one workbook?
They get laid out one after another as reading sections rather than switchable tabs. It works fine for reference material, but it's not the same as flipping between sheets in a spreadsheet app.
Does the formatting, like colors and column widths, carry over?
Some of it. Text and basic table structure usually come through, but cell colors, conditional formatting, and exact column widths often don't survive since Kindle pages reflow to fit the screen.
Can I convert XLSX to AZW3 without an internet connection?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet does the conversion locally, so it works with wifi off and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Is this a common thing people do?
It's a niche but real use case, mostly people who want to read a data-heavy document on a Kindle's e-ink screen instead of a laptop or phone.
Morphjet converts XLSX, AZW3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
