Video conversion

Convert WebM to WMA

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

WebM is a video format used mostly for web clips, and WMA is an audio-only format built for Windows. Converting means pulling the sound out of the WebM file and saving it as a standalone WMA track, with the picture dropped entirely. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to be uploaded anywhere.

How to convert WebM to WMA

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the WebM video, or a whole folder of them at once.
  2. Choose WMA as the output format.
  3. Convert. Morphjet extracts the audio track and writes the WMA file next to the original.
  4. Nothing is uploaded, the video stays on your machine the whole time.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert WebM to WMA when you only care about the sound in a WebM clip, like a recorded lecture, a podcast, or the voiceover from a screen capture, and you need it as a standalone audio file for a Windows program or device that expects WMA.

Keep the WebM if you still need the video, since converting to WMA throws away the picture for good.

Why not just use an online converter?

WebM files are often web recordings, screen captures, or downloaded clips, sometimes with a voice or a face in them. Sending one to an online converter means that video sits on a server you don't control until someone gets around to deleting it. Converting on your own computer keeps the file, and whatever's in it, on your machine the whole time.

Questions

Does converting WebM to WMA keep the video?

No. WMA is an audio-only format, so the picture is dropped and only the sound track is saved.

Will the audio quality drop?

A little. The audio in a WebM file is already compressed, and encoding it again into WMA adds a small extra loss. It's usually not noticeable for speech or casual listening.

Why would I want WMA instead of a more common audio format?

WMA is mainly useful if you're feeding the file into an older Windows program, a Windows audio library, or hardware that specifically expects it. For general use, a different audio format is often easier to work with.

Can I convert WebM to WMA without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet reads the WebM file and writes the WMA file locally, so the video never has to leave your computer.

Does the WMA keep any metadata from the WebM?

Basic tags like a title can sometimes carry over, but WebM files, especially recordings and clips, often don't have much metadata to begin with.
