Convert WebM to AVI
Updated Jul 2026
WebM is the video format used by browsers and web recording tools, while AVI is the older format many Windows video editors and legacy hardware expect. To convert WebM to AVI, open the file in a converter and export it as AVI. Doing it on your own computer means the recording never has to leave your machine to make the switch.

WebM vs AVI: what actually changes
| WebM | AVI | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Smaller, built for web streaming | Larger, since AVI doesn't compress as efficiently |
| Quality | Good, but lossy | No further quality lost in the conversion itself |
| Opens everywhere | Yes, in any modern browser | Widely supported on Windows and older editing software, not in most browsers |
| Editing support | Limited in older desktop editors | Broadly supported by legacy and consumer editing tools |
| Streaming friendly | Yes, designed for it | No, meant for local playback and editing, not web delivery |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WebM to AVI when you need to bring a screen recording or web video into an older editing program or a device that only reads AVI.
Keep the WebM if you're only ever going to play it in a browser or on the web, since it's already smaller and the conversion won't improve on that.
Why not just use an online converter?
Screen recordings and webcam clips saved as WebM often capture whatever was on your screen at the time, which can include things you didn't mean to keep around. Uploading that file to an online converter puts it on a server you don't control, even briefly. Converting on your own computer keeps the recording exactly where it started.
Questions
Does converting WebM to AVI lose quality?
No further quality is lost in the conversion step itself, though any quality already lost when the WebM was first recorded or compressed stays baked in. AVI can't add back detail the WebM didn't have.
Will the AVI file be bigger than the WebM?
Usually, yes. AVI doesn't compress video as tightly as WebM does, so the same clip typically takes up more space once it's converted.
Why would I need AVI instead of WebM?
AVI is the format many older Windows video editors, DVD authoring tools, and legacy hardware expect. If a program can't open your WebM recording, converting to AVI is usually the fix.
Can I convert WebM to AVI without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so the video never travels over the internet. You could disconnect from wifi and it would still work.
Morphjet converts WebM, AVI, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
