Convert WebM to MP4
Updated Jul 2026
WebM is a compact video format built for playing on web pages, but it doesn't open reliably in every phone, editor, or media player. MP4 is the format almost everything expects. To convert, open the WebM file in a converter and export it as MP4, right on your own computer, without uploading the video anywhere.

How to convert WebM to MP4
- Open Morphjet and drag in the WebM file you want to convert, or a whole folder of them at once.
- Choose MP4 as the output format.
- Convert. The MP4 is written next to your original, and the video never leaves your machine.
WebM vs MP4: what actually changes
| WebM | MP4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, works best in browsers and web-based tools | Yes, universal support across phones, TVs, and editors |
| File size | Smaller, compressed for efficient streaming | Larger for the same quality, but still practical |
| Quality | Good, tuned for web delivery | Good, though converting from WebM involves re-encoding and a small quality loss |
| Editing support | Limited, many editing programs won't import it directly | Broad, accepted by nearly every video editor |
| Typical source | Browser recordings, screen captures, some web downloads | The default export format for phones, cameras, and editors |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WebM to MP4 when you want to play the video on a phone or TV, import it into an editor, or send it to someone whose player doesn't recognize WebM.
Keep the WebM if it's staying inside a browser or a web-based tool, since that's what it was built for and converting won't gain you anything there.
Why not just use an online converter?
WebM files often come from screen recordings or browser captures, which can contain whatever was on your screen at the time, including messages, account details, or other personal information. Uploading that file to an online converter sends all of it to a stranger's server just to change the format. Converting on your own computer keeps the recording, and everything visible in it, on your machine the whole time.
Questions
Does converting WebM to MP4 lose quality?
A little. Going from WebM to MP4 usually means re-encoding the video rather than just changing the wrapper, so there's a small quality loss depending on the settings. At normal viewing quality it's hard to notice.
Why won't my WebM file open on my phone or in my video editor?
WebM was built for playing video on web pages, so browsers handle it well, but many phones, media players, and editing programs never added support for it. Converting to MP4 fixes that.
Does the MP4 keep the same audio?
Yes, the audio track carries over, it's just packaged inside the MP4 container along with the re-encoded video.
Will converting change the video's length, resolution, or frame rate?
No, the conversion keeps the same resolution, frame rate, and length. Only the format and compression change.
Can I convert WebM to MP4 without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never travels over the internet. You could even do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts WebM, MP4, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
