Convert WebM to MP3
Updated Jul 2026
WebM is a web video format that usually carries a soundtrack along with the picture, and MP3 is the plain audio format that plays on almost any device or player. To convert, open the WebM in a converter and export just its audio track as MP3, dropping the video. Doing this on your own computer means the clip never has to leave your machine.

How to convert WebM to MP3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the WebM file, or a whole folder of recordings, screen captures, or downloaded clips.
- Choose MP3 as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet pulls out the audio track, writes an MP3 next to the original, and nothing leaves your machine.
WebM vs MP3: what actually changes
| WebM | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains video | Yes, picture and sound together | No, audio only |
| File size | Larger, the video takes up most of it | Much smaller, since only the sound remains |
| Audio quality | Already compressed once inside the WebM | Re-encoded, so there's a small extra loss on top |
| Opens everywhere | Plays in browsers and some apps, not all media players | Plays on nearly any phone, car stereo, or audio app |
| Good for | Watching the recording | Listening only, playlists, voice memos, podcasts |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WebM to MP3 when you only need the sound from a screen recording, downloaded clip, webinar, or voice memo, and want a smaller file you can play on a phone, in a car, or in any plain audio app.
Keep the WebM if you still need the picture, since converting to MP3 throws the video away for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
A WebM clip might be a screen recording of your own desktop, a recorded call, or a personal voice memo, not something you want sitting on a stranger's server just to pull out the audio. Online converters require an upload to do that extraction. Converting on your own computer keeps the recording, and whatever it captured, entirely on your machine.
Questions
Does converting WebM to MP3 lose quality?
A little. The audio inside a WebM is already compressed, and turning it into MP3 compresses it again, so there's a small extra loss. For voice memos, screen recordings, and casual listening it's not noticeable.
Will I still have the video after converting?
No. MP3 only holds audio, so converting WebM to MP3 keeps the sound and permanently drops the picture. Keep a copy of the original WebM if you might need the video later.
Can I convert WebM to MP3 without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet runs the conversion on your own computer, so the file never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
Does the MP3 keep a title or artist tag?
WebM files usually don't carry rich audio tags to begin with, so there's often nothing to carry over. You can add a title, artist, or album tag to the MP3 afterward in most media players.
Why convert to MP3 instead of just keeping the WebM?
Plenty of car stereos, older phones, and simple audio players don't handle WebM at all, but virtually all of them play MP3. It's also a much smaller file when you don't need the video.
Morphjet converts WebM, MP3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
