Convert 3GP to WMA
Updated Jul 2026
3GP is a video format made for old mobile phones, and it usually carries a picture track alongside the audio. Converting to WMA pulls out just the sound and saves it as a Windows audio file, discarding the video. Doing this on your own computer means the clip never has to leave your machine.

How to convert 3GP to WMA
- Open Morphjet and drag in the 3GP file, or a whole folder of old phone clips at once.
- Choose WMA as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet pulls the audio track out of each video and writes the WMA file next to the original, all on your machine.
3GP vs WMA: what actually changes
| 3GP | WMA | |
|---|---|---|
| Media type | Video with an audio track | Audio only |
| File size | Larger, because it stores a picture too | Much smaller, since there's no video to store |
| Quality | Low bitrate audio, made for old phone storage and networks | Re-encoded from the 3GP audio, so it can't sound better than the original |
| Compatibility | Plays on old mobile phones and most video players | Built for Windows Media Player and Windows-based apps |
| Picture preserved | Yes | No, converting to WMA drops the video entirely |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert 3GP to WMA when you have an old phone video, like a voice memo or recorded lecture, and you only care about the sound, especially if you want it in a format Windows Media Player and other Windows apps handle natively.
Keep the original 3GP if the video itself, not just the audio, still matters to you, because that picture is gone for good once you convert.
Why not just use an online converter?
Old 3GP clips are often personal, a voicemail-style message, a recorded conversation, a home video from a first phone with a camera. Uploading one to a web converter to strip out the audio means a stranger's server gets a copy of that video first. Converting on your own computer means the clip and the extracted audio never leave your machine.
Questions
Does converting 3GP to WMA lose quality?
The audio in 3GP files is usually already low bitrate, since it was designed for old phone storage limits. Converting to WMA re-encodes that audio, so it can't add back detail that was never there, but for voice recordings the difference is rarely noticeable.
What happens to the video when I convert 3GP to WMA?
It's dropped. WMA is an audio-only format, so only the sound track carries over. If you need the picture too, keep the 3GP or convert to a video format instead.
Why would I still have 3GP files?
3GP was the standard video format on mobile phones before smartphones took over, so it shows up in old phone backups, voicemail exports, and early camera phone footage.
Can I convert 3GP to WMA without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet reads the 3GP, pulls the audio, and writes the WMA file locally, so nothing is sent over the internet.
Morphjet converts 3GP, WMA, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
