Convert 3GP to MKV

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

3GP is the compressed video format used by old mobile phones, and MKV is a modern container built to hold high-quality video and audio. To convert 3GP to MKV, open the file in a converter and export it as MKV. Doing this on your own computer keeps old personal footage off other people's servers, since nothing has to be uploaded first.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert 3GP to MKV when you've pulled old video off a phone, SIM card, or memory card and want to store or edit it in a format that current software can actually open, especially if it's the only copy of that footage you have.

If the 3GP clip already plays fine wherever you need it to, there's no real reason to convert it, since MKV can't add back detail that the original recording never had.

Why not just use an online converter?

Old 3GP clips are often personal footage, family videos, or recordings people would rather not hand to a stranger's server just to change the format. An online converter means uploading that video and waiting for someone else's computer to process and return it. Converting on your own machine does the same job without the file ever leaving your computer.

Questions

Will converting 3GP to MKV improve the video quality?

No. MKV is a container, not a quality boost, so it can't restore detail that was lost when the video was originally compressed into 3GP. What you gain is a format that modern software can open and edit properly.

Can I convert 3GP to MKV without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so the video never has to travel over the internet.

Why won't my phone or computer play 3GP files anymore?

3GP was designed for early 2000s phones with slow networks and small screens. Most current phones, apps, and editors have dropped support now that video has moved on to formats built for larger, higher-quality files.

Does the video's original recording date carry over?

In most cases yes, the recording date stored in the 3GP file carries over to the MKV. It's worth double-checking in your media player if the date matters to you.

Can I convert a whole folder of old 3GP videos at once?

Yes. You can drag in an entire folder and convert every clip to MKV in one pass, which is useful when you're going through old phone backups.
