Convert 3GP to MP3
Updated Jul 2026
3GP is a video format from older mobile phones, and MP3 is the standard audio format that plays everywhere. Converting pulls just the sound out of the 3GP file and saves it as an MP3, dropping the video. Doing this on your own computer means the file never has to leave your machine.

How to convert 3GP to MP3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the 3GP video, or a whole folder of them at once.
- Choose MP3 as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet pulls the audio track out of the video and writes an MP3 next to the original, and nothing leaves your machine.
3GP vs MP3: what actually changes
| 3GP | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains video | Yes, picture and sound together | No, audio only |
| File size | Larger, since it includes the picture | Much smaller, sound alone |
| Audio quality | Compressed for old mobile networks, often a low bitrate | Matches what the 3GP had, re-encoding can't add detail back |
| Opens everywhere | No, mostly old phones and a handful of media players | Yes, virtually every phone, computer, and app |
| Track tags (title, artist) | Not really used | Yes, MP3 supports these if you add them |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert 3GP to MP3 when only the sound matters, a voice memo, a recorded call, a song someone sent you, and you want a smaller file that plays in any music app.
Keep the original 3GP if the picture matters too, since converting to MP3 throws the video away for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
3GP files from old phones often hold recordings people never meant to post anywhere, a voice memo, a personal video, a recorded call. Uploading one to a web converter just to pull out the audio means that file sits on someone else's server, even if briefly. Converting on your own computer keeps it there the whole time, nothing is sent out.
Questions
Will converting 3GP to MP3 lose quality?
The audio in old 3GP files was usually compressed heavily for slow mobile networks, so there isn't much detail left to lose. The MP3 will sound about the same as the original, not better.
What happens to the video part of the file?
It's dropped. MP3 is audio only, so converting keeps the sound and discards the picture entirely. Keep the original 3GP if you might want the video later.
Can I convert a whole folder of old 3GP files at once?
Yes. Drag the whole folder into Morphjet and it converts each file to MP3 on its own.
Does the MP3 keep any of the original file's information?
3GP files rarely carry much beyond a date, so there isn't a lot of metadata to preserve. You can add title and artist tags to the MP3 yourself afterward if you want them.
Can I do this without uploading the video anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet converts on your own computer, so the video and its audio never leave your machine, wifi on or off.
Morphjet converts 3GP, MP3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
