Convert 3GP to M4A
Updated Jul 2026
3GP is a video format from older mobile phones, and M4A is an audio-only format used by iTunes and voice memo apps. To convert 3GP to M4A, you pull the audio track out of the video and save it on its own. Doing this on your own computer means the original video clip never has to leave your machine.

How to convert 3GP to M4A
- Open Morphjet and drag in the 3GP video, or a whole folder of them, if you're pulling audio from several clips at once.
- Choose M4A as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet extracts the audio track and writes an M4A file next to the original, and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
3GP vs M4A: what actually changes
| 3GP | M4A | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains video | Yes | No, audio only |
| File size | Larger, video plus audio | Much smaller, audio only |
| Audio quality | Often recorded at low bitrate to keep old mobile files small | Same as the source audio, since only the picture is dropped |
| Compatibility | Mostly older phones and a handful of media players | Opens in iTunes, Apple Music, Voice Memos, and most audio players |
| Tags and metadata | Minimal, tied to the video file | Supports track tags like title and artist |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert 3GP to M4A when you have an old phone video and only care about the sound, like a voice recording, a song someone filmed, or a clip you want to turn into a ringtone.
If you still want the picture, keep the 3GP, because pulling the audio into an M4A throws the video away for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
An online converter has to receive your whole video file just to hand you back the audio, which means a personal recording sits on a stranger's server, even briefly. Converting on your own computer does the same extraction locally, so the video clip and whatever it shows never travel anywhere.
Questions
Does converting 3GP to M4A keep the video?
No. The conversion pulls out the audio track only and the video is discarded. If you want to keep the picture, hold onto the original 3GP.
Will the audio sound better or worse after converting?
About the same. The audio itself isn't being upgraded, just moved into an M4A container, so it will sound exactly as clear, or as compressed, as it did in the original 3GP.
Can I use the M4A as a ringtone?
Yes, M4A is the format iPhones expect for custom ringtones and alert sounds, so an audio clip pulled from a 3GP works well for that.
Can I convert 3GP to M4A without uploading the video?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet extracts the audio on your own computer, so the video file never has to go over the internet.
Why is 3GP video quality often so low?
3GP was designed for old mobile networks and small phone storage, so both the video and audio inside it are usually compressed hard to keep files tiny.
Morphjet converts 3GP, M4A, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
