Convert ODT to WebP

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

ODT is an editable word processor document, and WebP is a compressed image format used on the web. To convert, open the file in a converter that renders each page and saves it as a WebP picture. Doing this on your own computer means the document's text never has to leave your machine.

How to convert ODT to WebP

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the ODT document, or a whole folder of them.
  2. Choose WebP as the output format.
  3. Convert. Morphjet renders each page as a picture and saves it as a WebP file next to your original. Nothing leaves your machine.

ODT vs WebP: what actually changes

ODTWebP
Editable textYes, fully editable in a word processorNo, it's a flattened picture
Multiple pagesOne file holds every pageEach page becomes its own image
Opens everywhereNeeds a word processor that reads ODTYes, opens in any browser or image viewer
File sizeSmall, mostly text and formattingLarger per page, since it's now stored as pixels
TransparencyNot applicableSupported, though a document page is usually a solid background
Metadata (author, comments)Kept in the fileDropped, since the page is rendered as a picture

When to convert, and when not to

Convert ODT to WebP when you want a snapshot of how a document looks, need to embed it in a webpage, or want to post it somewhere that takes images but not document uploads.

Keep the ODT if anyone still needs to edit the text, because a WebP is just a flattened picture, not a document.

Why not just use an online converter?

Some ODT documents hold sensitive text, meeting notes, contracts, personal letters. Uploading one to an online converter puts that text on someone else's server while it's processed. Converting on your own computer means the words in that document never leave your machine.

Questions

Does converting ODT to WebP lose quality?

The page is rendered into pixels, so you get a faithful picture of how it looked, not a degraded copy. WebP does use light lossy compression, but on text pages this is generally invisible.

What happens to a multi-page ODT document?

Each page becomes its own WebP image. A ten-page document turns into ten separate image files, so this works best for short documents, not long ones.

Can I still edit the text after converting?

No. A WebP is just a picture. Once it's an image, getting the words back means retyping them or running the image through OCR.

Does the WebP keep the document's author or comments?

No. Embedded metadata like author name, comments, and track changes is dropped, since the document is rendered as a plain picture.

Can I convert ODT to WebP without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet converts on your own computer, so the document's content never has to travel over the internet.

Morphjet converts ODT, WebP, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
