Convert ODT to PDF
Updated Jul 2026
ODT is the document format used by free office suites, and PDF is the format almost anyone can open and that looks the same everywhere. To convert ODT to PDF, open the file in a converter and export it as PDF. Doing this on your own computer means the document never has to be uploaded anywhere to get converted.

How to convert ODT to PDF

- Choose PDF as the output format.
- Convert. The PDF is written next to your original, and the document never leaves your machine.
ODT vs PDF: what actually changes
| ODT | ||
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | No, needs a free office suite or a compatible editor | Yes, opens on nearly any computer or phone without special software |
| Layout stays fixed | Can shift depending on fonts and software installed | Yes, looks the same on every device and printer |
| Still editable | Yes, full text editing | Not really, meant for viewing and signing rather than editing |
| File size | Smaller for plain text documents | Somewhat larger, especially with embedded fonts and images |
| Keeps document metadata | Yes | Yes, carries over author and date info unless you strip it |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert ODT to PDF when you're sending a document to someone who may not have a free office suite, submitting a form or report, or you just want the layout to stay exactly as you formatted it.
Keep the ODT if you or the recipient still needs to edit the text, since a PDF is meant to be a finished, fixed copy rather than a working draft.
Why not just use an online converter?
A lot of ODT to PDF tools online ask you to upload the document to their server to do the conversion, which means a contract, report, or letter that might have names, addresses, or other private details sits on a stranger's machine, even briefly. Converting on your own computer means the file is read, converted, and saved locally, and the contents never travel over the internet at all.
Questions
Does converting ODT to PDF lose any formatting?
Generally no. The conversion preserves the layout, fonts, and images as they appear in the ODT, which is one of the main reasons people convert to PDF in the first place, to lock in how the document looks.
Can I still edit the document after converting to PDF?
Not easily. PDF is meant to be a fixed, finished version of a document rather than something you keep editing. If you need to make more changes, edit the original ODT first and convert again afterward.
Does the PDF keep the author and date information from the ODT?
Usually yes, the document properties like author name and creation date carry over into the PDF's metadata unless you remove them before sharing.
Can I convert ODT to PDF without an internet connection?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it works even with your wifi off, and nothing is sent anywhere to get the job done.
Why convert ODT to PDF instead of just sending the ODT file?
Not everyone has a free office suite installed, but nearly everyone can open a PDF, and it won't reflow or look different depending on what software the other person has.
Morphjet converts ODT, PDF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
