Convert ODT to MOBI
Updated Jul 2026
ODT is the document format used by free office suites, built for fixed pages you print or edit. MOBI is an ebook format that older Kindles read, with text that reflows to fit the screen. To convert, open the ODT in a converter and export it as MOBI, all on your own computer, without uploading the file anywhere.

How to convert ODT to MOBI
- Open Morphjet and drag in the ODT file, or a whole folder of them, that you want turned into an ebook.
- Choose MOBI as the output format.
- Convert. The MOBI file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
ODT vs MOBI: what actually changes
| ODT | MOBI | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens on | a free office suite, and most word processors | Older Kindles and ebook readers that still support MOBI |
| Page layout | Fixed pages with margins, headers, and footers | Reflows to fit the screen, fixed layout is not kept |
| Editable | Yes, in a word processor | No, meant for reading, not editing |
| File size | Depends on content, typically modest for text | Usually similar or smaller once page formatting overhead is gone |
| Keeps title and author metadata | Yes, in document properties | Yes, carries over as ebook metadata |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert ODT to MOBI when you've written something in a free office suite, like a manuscript, report, or long document, and want to read it on an older Kindle instead of a laptop screen.
Keep the ODT if you still need to edit the text or preserve exact page layout, headers, and footers, since MOBI reflows everything for reading and drops fixed formatting.
Why not just use an online converter?
A manuscript or personal document often carries more of you than an average file, drafts, unfinished ideas, things you haven't shared yet. Running it through an online ebook converter means that document sits on a server you don't control while it's processed. Converting it on your own computer means the words never leave your machine.
Questions
Does converting ODT to MOBI keep the formatting?
The text carries over correctly, but MOBI reflows pages to fit the screen, so fixed layouts, columns, headers, and footers from the ODT don't survive as designed. Simple documents with headings and paragraphs convert cleanly.
Will my Kindle actually read a MOBI file?
Older Kindles do. Newer Kindle models have moved on to other formats, so it's worth checking what your specific device supports before you rely on MOBI.
Does the MOBI keep the document's title and author info?
Yes. The metadata in the ODT's document properties, like title and author, generally carries over into the MOBI file's ebook metadata.
Can I convert ODT to MOBI without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never travels over the internet, even with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts ODT, MOBI, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
