Camera RAW conversion

Convert NEF to PDF

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

NEF is the raw photo format used by Nikon cameras, storing every bit of sensor data before any editing. PDF is a universal document format that opens on any computer, phone, or printer without special software. To convert, open the NEF in a converter and export it as a PDF page, entirely on your own computer, with no upload required.

How to convert NEF to PDF

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the NEF file straight from your memory card, or a whole folder of them at once.
  2. Choose PDF as the output format.
  3. Convert. Each photo becomes its own PDF page, written next to the originals, and nothing leaves your machine.

NEF vs PDF: what actually changes

NEFPDF
Opens everywhereNo, needs raw software or a compatible photo appYes, opens on nearly any computer, phone, or printer
File sizeVery large, full uncompressed sensor dataSmaller once rendered as a page image
QualityLossless, unprocessed raw sensor dataLossless once rendered, but flattened into a fixed image
Editable like a negativeYes, exposure and white balance can still be adjustedNo, it's a finished, flattened page
Keeps camera metadata (EXIF)Yes, full camera and shooting dataYes, if you choose to keep it

When to convert, and when not to

Convert NEF to PDF when you want to share proofs with a client, print a contact sheet, or send photos to someone who just needs to open and view them without any special software.

Keep the NEF original if you still plan to edit the exposure, white balance, or color, because converting to PDF flattens the image and gives up the raw editing latitude for good.

Why not just use an online converter?

NEF files carry the same kind of metadata as any camera raw format, including the date, camera settings, and sometimes the GPS location where the photo was taken. Run the file through an online converter and that data, along with the photo itself, gets uploaded to someone else's server. Converting on your own computer keeps the photo and everything attached to it on your machine the whole time.

Questions

Does converting NEF to PDF lose quality?

The PDF page itself is lossless, but turning a raw NEF into a viewable image means the raw sensor data gets processed and flattened. You keep visual quality, but you lose the ability to re-edit exposure or white balance the way you could with the original raw file.

Will the PDF keep my camera's metadata?

It can. The date, camera model, and shooting settings from the NEF can be carried into the PDF's metadata if you choose to keep it, though most people converting for sharing don't need to.

Why can't I just open a NEF file directly?

NEF is Nikon's raw format, and most photo viewers, browsers, and printers don't know how to read the raw sensor data inside it. Nikon's own software or a raw-capable photo app can open it, but a PDF opens almost anywhere without any of that.

Can I convert a whole folder of NEF files to PDF at once?

Yes. Drop a folder of NEF files into Morphjet and it converts each one to its own PDF, all locally, without uploading anything.

Can I convert NEF to PDF without uploading my photos?

Yes. Morphjet does the conversion on your own computer, so the raw files and everything in them never touch the internet.

Morphjet converts NEF, PDF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
