Camera RAW conversion
Convert NEF to WebP
Updated Jul 2026
NEF is the raw format Nikon cameras save, and WebP is a compressed format built for the web. To convert NEF to WebP, open the raw file in a converter and export it, turning the raw sensor data into a small, ready-to-share image. Doing this on your own computer keeps the file, and its metadata, off other people's servers.

How to convert NEF to WebP
- Open Morphjet and drag in the NEF files you want to convert, or point it at a whole folder of raw photos.
- Choose WebP as the output format, and pick a quality level if you want a smaller file.
- Convert. The WebP images are written next to your NEF originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
NEF vs WebP: what actually changes
| NEF | WebP | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Large, tens of megabytes per photo | Small, often under a megabyte |
| Quality | Lossless, full sensor data | Lossy, compressed for viewing |
| Editability | Exposure, white balance, and color can still be adjusted | Finished image, no raw adjustments left to make |
| Opens everywhere | No, needs raw-capable photo software | Yes, opens in every modern browser |
| Keeps camera metadata (EXIF) | Yes, in full | Partial, some raw-specific data doesn't survive export |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert NEF to WebP when you want to share Nikon photos online, post them on a site, or free up storage, since raw files are far larger than they need to be just for viewing.
Keep the NEF original if you might want to re-edit exposure, white balance, or color later, since a WebP export keeps only the finished look and throws away the raw data behind it.
Why not just use an online converter?
NEF files carry the camera's full EXIF data, often including the exact GPS location where the photo was taken, along with a lot of other shooting detail. An online converter would receive that raw file, location and all, before handing back a WebP. Converting on your own computer means the raw photo, and everywhere it was taken, never leaves your machine.
Questions
Does converting NEF to WebP lose quality?
Yes, some. NEF holds the camera's full raw sensor data, and WebP compresses that down into a much smaller finished image. For sharing or web use the difference is hard to see, but you can't recover the raw detail afterward.
Will the WebP keep the photo's location and camera details?
Some of it. Basic details like the date and camera model often carry over, but a lot of the raw-specific data doesn't survive the export, and GPS location may or may not be kept depending on the converter. Check before sharing publicly.
Why convert NEF to WebP instead of JPG?
WebP tends to produce a smaller file than JPG at similar visual quality, and it's supported by every modern browser, which makes it a good fit for photos going on a website.
Can I convert NEF to WebP without uploading the raw file?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet reads and converts the raw file on your own computer, so it never gets sent anywhere. You can do it with no internet connection at all.
Morphjet converts NEF, WebP, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
