Convert MP3 to WMA
Updated Jul 2026
MP3 and WMA are both compressed audio formats, but WMA is tied closely to Windows and plays natively in certain older Windows programs and devices that don't handle MP3 as well. To convert, open the MP3 in a converter and export it as WMA. Doing this on your own computer means your music never has to be uploaded anywhere.

How to convert MP3 to WMA
- Open Morphjet and drag in the MP3 file, or a whole folder of tracks, that you want to convert.
- Choose WMA as the output format and pick a bitrate.
- Convert. The WMA files are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
MP3 vs WMA: what actually changes
| MP3 | WMA | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Compact, typically 128 to 320 kbps | Similar, sometimes a bit smaller at the same bitrate |
| Quality | Lossy, one round of compression | Lossy, and converting from MP3 adds a second round of compression loss |
| Opens everywhere | Yes, plays on almost every device and platform | No, mainly recognized on Windows and by some Windows-linked hardware |
| Keeps song info (tags) | Yes | Yes |
| Typical use | General purpose, sharing, any device | Specific older Windows software, hardware, or libraries that expect it |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert MP3 to WMA when a specific older Windows program, media library, or piece of hardware you own expects WMA files and won't recognize MP3.
Keep the MP3 if you just want a format that plays everywhere without a second thought, since MP3 is already more widely supported than WMA, and turning one lossy format into another only adds compression loss without any real upside.
Why not just use an online converter?
Online converters ask you to hand over your music library to a stranger's server just to change the file extension. MP3 to WMA is a plain lossy-to-lossy re-encode, so there's no reason the files need to travel anywhere to do it. Converting on your own computer keeps your tracks, and whatever they reveal about what you listen to, off other people's servers.
Questions
Does converting MP3 to WMA lose quality?
A little. MP3 is already lossy, so re-encoding it to WMA adds a second layer of compression on top of the first. Most people won't hear the difference, but it isn't a lossless conversion.
Will a WMA file play on my phone or on a Mac?
Not on its own, usually. WMA is closely tied to Windows, so phones, Macs, and many streaming devices need extra software to open it, while MP3 plays almost everywhere by default.
Does the WMA file keep the song's title, artist, and album info?
Yes. Morphjet carries the metadata over from the MP3, so titles, artists, and album details come through in the converted WMA file.
Is there any benefit to WMA over MP3?
Not generally. The main reason to convert is compatibility with a specific older Windows program or device that expects WMA. If nothing you use requires it, there's no quality or size advantage to switching.
Can I convert MP3 to WMA without uploading my music?
Yes. Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so nothing gets sent over the internet.
Morphjet converts MP3, WMA, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
