Convert MP3 to FLAC

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

To convert MP3 to FLAC, open the file in a converter and export it as FLAC. This wraps the audio in a lossless container, but it can't restore detail the MP3 already lost, it just repackages what's there. Doing it on your own computer means the recording never has to be uploaded anywhere.

How to convert MP3 to FLAC

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the MP3 files you want to convert, or a whole folder at once.
  2. Choose FLAC as the output format.
  3. Convert. The FLAC files are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert MP3 to FLAC when a music app, library, or piece of hardware you use only accepts lossless files, or you want every track in your collection in one consistent format.

Don't convert expecting better sound, an MP3 already lost detail during its original encoding, and turning it into FLAC just stores that same lossy audio in a bigger file.

Why not just use an online converter?

Some MP3 collections include personal recordings, voice memos, or music you've bought and don't want sitting on someone else's server. An online converter has to receive the whole file before it can hand back a FLAC. Converting on your own computer keeps the audio right where it already is.

Questions

Does converting MP3 to FLAC improve the sound quality?

No. FLAC is lossless, but it can only losslessly store the audio it's given. Whatever detail the MP3 lost when it was first encoded is gone, and converting to FLAC just locks in what's left.

Why would I convert MP3 to FLAC at all?

Mostly for consistency and compatibility, some libraries, players, or audio hardware are set up to expect FLAC, and it's simpler to standardize a collection than to keep two formats around.

Will the FLAC file be much bigger than the MP3?

Yes, often 2 to 4 times larger, since FLAC doesn't throw away audio data the way MP3 does. It's a real trade of storage space for a lossless container.

Does the FLAC keep the song's title, artist, and cover art?

Yes. Morphjet carries the tags over from the MP3's ID3 metadata into FLAC's own tag format, so your library info and artwork stay intact.

Can I convert MP3 to FLAC without uploading my files?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts on your own computer, so the audio never has to travel over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
