Convert MOV to MP3
Updated Jul 2026
MOV is the video format from iPhones and Macs, and it usually carries an audio track alongside the picture. MP3 is an audio-only format that plays in almost anything. To convert MOV to MP3, pull out the audio track and encode it as MP3. Doing this on your own computer means the video, and whatever it shows, never leaves your machine.

How to convert MOV to MP3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the MOV file, or a whole folder of recordings, that you want the audio from.
- Choose MP3 as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet pulls out the audio track and writes the MP3 next to your original. Nothing leaves your machine.
MOV vs MP3: what actually changes
| MOV | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains video | Yes | No, audio only |
| File size | Large, video dominates the file | Much smaller, often a fraction of the original |
| Audio quality | Original recorded quality | Compressed, with a small one-time loss on export |
| Compatibility | Opens in most modern video players, native on Apple devices | Plays in almost any app or device |
| Metadata | Can include date, location, and device info | Basic audio tags only, location is not carried over |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert MOV to MP3 when you only need the sound, like a lecture, interview, voice memo, or podcast that happened to be recorded on video, and you want a lighter file to play or send.
Keep the original MOV if you still need the picture, since converting to MP3 permanently throws away the video track.
Why not just use an online converter?
A video someone recorded of you, or a screen recording, often carries a lot more than sound, including faces, backgrounds, and sometimes the location it was shot. Send that MOV to an online audio extractor and the whole video sits on a stranger's server, even though all you wanted back was the audio. Converting on your own computer keeps the video off other people's servers entirely, and only the MP3 you asked for gets written to disk.
Questions
Does converting MOV to MP3 lose quality?
A little. MP3 compresses the audio, so there's a small, one-time quality loss on export. For speech, voice memos, or casual listening it's not noticeable. For music, a higher bitrate MP3 keeps most of the detail.
What happens to the video when I convert MOV to MP3?
It's gone. MP3 only holds audio, so the picture is discarded during conversion. Keep the original MOV around if you might want the video later.
Will the MP3 keep the same metadata as the MOV?
No. Details like location and device information typically don't carry over, you get basic audio tags instead. If privacy is a concern, that's actually a benefit, since less rides along with the file.
Can I convert MOV to MP3 without uploading the video anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet extracts the audio and writes the MP3 on your own computer, so the video never travels over the internet.
Morphjet converts MOV, MP3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
