Convert MOV to GIF
Updated Jul 2026
MOV is the video format iPhone and Mac recordings use, and GIF is a small, silent animation that loops automatically and plays anywhere, from group chats to web pages. To convert, open the clip in a converter, trim it if needed, and export as GIF. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to leave your machine.

How to convert MOV to GIF
- Open Morphjet and drag in the MOV clip you want to convert. Add one file or a whole folder at once.
- Choose GIF as the output format, and trim to the part you want if the clip is more than a few seconds long.
- Convert. The GIF is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
MOV vs GIF: what actually changes
| MOV | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Efficient even for long clips | Grows fast, best kept to a few seconds |
| Sound | Yes, keeps audio | No, GIF can't store audio at all |
| Colors | Millions, full video quality | Limited to 256 per frame, so gradients can band |
| Looping | Plays once unless set to loop | Loops automatically by default |
| Compatibility | Needs a video player or app that reads MOV | Opens and auto-plays almost everywhere, no player needed |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert MOV to GIF when you want a short clip to loop automatically and play instantly in a chat, forum, or webpage without anyone needing to press play.
Keep the MOV if you need the audio, want more than a few seconds of smooth motion, or care about picture quality, since GIF drops sound entirely and caps colors at 256 per frame.
Why not just use an online converter?
Screen recordings and quick clips often catch more than you meant them to, a phone number on a screen, a conversation in the background, a room in your house. Sending that clip to an online converter means a stranger's server processes it, and sometimes keeps a copy. Converting on your own computer keeps the video exactly where it started.
Questions
Does converting MOV to GIF lose the audio?
Yes, always. GIF has no way to store sound, so any audio in the MOV is dropped entirely. If you need the sound, keep the MOV or convert to a different video format instead.
Why does my GIF look worse than the original video?
GIF only supports 256 colors per frame, compared to millions in MOV, so gradients and low light footage can look banded or blotchy. It also plays at a lower frame rate to keep the file size down, which is why the motion looks choppier.
Will a long MOV turn into a huge GIF?
Yes. GIF isn't compressed the way video is, so every second adds up fast. Most people trim to just a few seconds before converting.
Does the GIF keep the date or location from my video?
No. GIF doesn't have a place to store that kind of information the way MOV does, so any date or location data attached to the original clip isn't carried over.
Can I convert MOV to GIF without uploading my video?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so the clip never travels over the internet. You can even do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts MOV, GIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
