Convert MOV to M4A
Updated Jul 2026
A MOV file from your iPhone or Mac often has video you don't actually need, just the audio underneath it. To convert MOV to M4A, pull out that audio track and save it as an M4A file that plays in iTunes, on an iPhone, or in any podcast app. Doing this on your own computer means the recording never leaves your machine.

How to convert MOV to M4A
- Open Morphjet and drag in the MOV file, or a whole folder of them, that you want the audio from.
- Choose M4A as the output format.
- Convert. Morphjet strips out the video and writes just the audio as an M4A file next to your original, all on your own machine.
MOV vs M4A: what actually changes
| MOV | M4A | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains video | Yes, video and audio together | No, audio only |
| File size | Large, video dominates the size | Much smaller, often a fraction of the original |
| Quality | High, often lightly compressed audio | Good, but the audio is re-compressed on export |
| Compatibility | Plays in QuickTime and most video apps | Plays in iTunes, on iPhone, and in most music and podcast apps |
| Easy to edit as audio | Awkward, needs a video editor to pull out the sound | Yes, opens directly in audio apps |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert MOV to M4A when you recorded a voice memo, interview, lecture, or song idea as a video just to capture the sound, and you want a lighter, audio-only file you can play back, edit, or add to iTunes.
Keep the MOV if you actually need the picture, since converting to M4A throws the video away for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
Recordings saved as MOV are often personal, an interview, a private conversation, a song you're not ready to share. Uploading that file to an online converter means a stranger's server processes it, and often keeps a copy, even if only briefly. Converting on your own computer means the audio, and whatever's said in it, never leaves your machine.
Questions
Does converting MOV to M4A lose audio quality?
There's a small re-encoding step, so a little quality is lost, but for voice recordings and most everyday audio it isn't noticeable. If the MOV has audio you recorded carefully, keep a copy of the original too.
What happens to the video when I convert MOV to M4A?
It's discarded. M4A is an audio-only format, so if you need the picture back later, you'll need the original MOV.
Can I convert MOV to M4A without uploading the file?
Yes. Morphjet runs the conversion on your own computer, so the file never touches the internet. That matters for anything personal recorded in the video.
Will the M4A play on my iPhone or in iTunes?
Yes. M4A is the format iTunes and voice memo apps already use, so it plays natively without any extra software.
Does the M4A keep the original recording date?
Usually yes, the file's creation date carries over, but details like camera or device info tied to the video are lost along with the video itself.
Morphjet converts MOV, M4A, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
