Convert HTML to AZW3

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

AZW3 is the ebook format Kindle devices and apps read natively, while HTML is just a web page. To convert HTML to AZW3, open the file in a converter and export it as AZW3, which repackages the page into a single paginated ebook file. Doing this on your own computer means the page never has to leave your machine.

How to convert HTML to AZW3

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the HTML file, or a whole folder of saved pages, you want turned into an ebook.
  2. Choose AZW3 as the output format.
  3. Convert. The AZW3 file is written next to your original, ready to copy onto a Kindle, and nothing leaves your machine.

HTML vs AZW3: what actually changes

HTMLAZW3
Opens on Kindle devicesNo, not nativelyYes, native Kindle ebook format
Self-contained fileNo, often points to images, fonts, or scripts elsewhereYes, everything is bundled into one file
Typical file sizeSmall, mostly text and markupLarger, since images and layout are packed in
PaginationNo, one continuous scrollYes, paginated like a book
Book metadata (title, author, cover)No structured fieldsYes, shows up in a Kindle library
Live links to other pagesYes, can link anywhere on the webLimited, links mostly stop working as live web pages

When to convert, and when not to

Convert HTML to AZW3 when you've saved an article, a set of documentation pages, or a long web page and want to read it on a Kindle with proper pagination instead of scrolling in a browser.

Keep the HTML if you still need to click through to other pages, view embedded video, or edit the page's actual code, since AZW3 flattens all of that into a static book.

Why not just use an online converter?

Converting a web page into an ebook usually means pasting a link into an online tool and letting it fetch and repackage the page, and whatever it contains, on a server you don't control. Doing the conversion on your own computer means the HTML file you already saved stays put. Nothing gets uploaded, and no one else ever sees the page you're turning into a book.

Questions

Will an HTML page look right as an AZW3 ebook?

Basic formatting like headings, paragraphs, and images usually carries over well. Complex layouts built with interactive scripts or embedded video won't survive, since AZW3 is built for reflowable text, not interactive pages.

Do links still work after converting HTML to AZW3?

Links to other sections within the same file usually still work. Links out to other websites won't do anything useful on a Kindle, since the device is displaying a book, not browsing the web.

Does converting HTML to AZW3 lose any content?

Text carries over completely, and images usually come through too. Anything relying on live scripts, external stylesheets, or video embeds gets left behind, since AZW3 is a static ebook format.

Can I convert HTML to AZW3 without uploading the file?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never has to travel over the internet to become an ebook.
