What is an RWL file?

Updated Jul 2026

Definition

RWL is the raw image format used by Leica cameras. It stores everything the camera's sensor captured, before any in-camera processing, so photographers can adjust exposure, white balance, and color later without losing quality. The trade-off is that RWL files are large and only a limited set of software can open them.

Why RWL exists

Leica uses RWL as its own raw format across several camera lines, similar to how Canon has CR2 and Nikon has NEF. When you shoot in raw mode, the camera writes out the sensor data with almost nothing thrown away, rather than compressing it into a finished JPG.

That matters because a raw file is closer to a digital negative than a photo. It holds more detail in shadows and highlights, and it lets you change exposure or white balance after the fact instead of being locked into whatever the camera decided at the moment you pressed the shutter.

The cost is size and support. An RWL file can run many times larger than a JPG from the same shot, and because it's specific to Leica, plenty of photo apps, viewers, and websites don't recognize it at all. People usually end up converting RWL to JPG or TIFF so the photo can be viewed, shared, or edited somewhere that doesn't understand raw files.

The trade-offs

Strengths

  • Keeps the full detail captured by the sensor, with no compression loss
  • Gives much more room to adjust exposure and white balance after shooting
  • Preserves color information a compressed JPG throws away

Watch-outs

  • Files are much larger than JPG, eating up storage fast
  • Many apps, viewers, and websites can't open RWL at all
  • Needs converting before you can share or print it most places

A note on privacy

An RWL file carries EXIF metadata, including the camera settings and often the GPS location of where the photo was taken. Running it through an online converter means that data leaves your machine and sits on someone else's server. Converting locally keeps both the raw image and its location history on your computer.

Questions

How do I open an RWL file?

You'll need software that specifically supports Leica raw files, or you can convert it to a JPG or TIFF first so it opens in ordinary photo viewers and editors.

Is RWL better than JPG?

For editing flexibility and image quality, yes: RWL keeps far more detail. For everyday viewing and sharing, JPG wins because almost anything can open it, while RWL support is narrow.

Why does my Leica camera save photos as RWL?

When you shoot in raw mode, the camera stores the sensor data with minimal processing so you have more to work with later. If you'd rather skip converting, you can switch the camera to save JPG instead.

Can I convert RWL without uploading it?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts RWL on your own computer, so the raw file and its embedded metadata never leave your machine.

Morphjet opens and converts RWL and 1,800+ other formats, all on your own computer. Launching this July.
