What is an M2TS file?
Updated Jul 2026
M2TS is the video file format Blu-ray discs and many camcorders use to store recorded footage, also called BDAV. It holds high-definition video and audio without additional quality loss during editing, matching the way it was captured. The catch is that it's a niche container many editing tools and media players won't open without converting it first.

Why M2TS exists
M2TS grew out of the Blu-ray Disc Association's BDAV specification, built to package high-definition video for discs and the camcorders that record straight to Blu-ray-compatible media. You'll see it on Blu-ray movie discs and on footage pulled off AVCHD camcorders, some drones, and a handful of security systems.
Under the hood it's a transport stream, the same family of container used for broadcast TV, wrapped around video and audio tracks plus subtitle and chapter data. That structure makes it good at holding a lot of information reliably, including live recording, but it's overkill and unfamiliar for anything outside disc authoring or camcorder playback.
Most people run into M2TS after pulling footage off a camcorder or ripping a Blu-ray, then finding their editing software, phone, or upload page won't touch it. Converting it to MP4 or another common format is usually the fastest way past that wall.
The trade-offs
Strengths
- Holds full high-definition quality with no extra compression loss
- Standard format for Blu-ray discs and AVCHD camcorders
- Can carry multiple audio tracks, subtitles, and chapter markers
Watch-outs
- Not widely supported by editing software or phones
- Large file sizes compared to more compressed formats
- Usually needs converting before you can edit or share it
A note on privacy
M2TS footage from a camcorder or drone can carry embedded metadata like the recording date and device details. Running that file through an online converter means uploading your raw footage to a server you don't control before you get anything back. Converting it on your own machine keeps the footage, and whatever it shows, on your computer the whole time.
Questions
How do I open an M2TS file?
Many modern media players handle M2TS directly, but editing software and phones often don't. Converting it to MP4 is the most reliable fix if something refuses to open it.
Is M2TS better than MP4?
M2TS preserves more of the original camcorder or disc quality, but MP4 is far more widely supported. For editing, sharing, or uploading, MP4 is almost always the more practical choice.
Why does my camcorder save video as M2TS?
AVCHD camcorders and Blu-ray recording devices use M2TS because it's built for exactly that: high-definition recording with the structure discs and players expect.
Can I convert M2TS without uploading it?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts M2TS on your own computer, so the footage never has to leave your machine.
Morphjet opens and converts M2TS and 1,800+ other formats, all on your own computer. Launching this July.
