Convert WMV to M4V
Updated Jul 2026
WMV is Windows' native video format, and M4V is the video format iTunes and Apple devices use. To convert WMV to M4V, open the file in a converter and export it as M4V. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to be uploaded anywhere just to change its format.

WMV vs M4V: what actually changes
| WMV | M4V | |
|---|---|---|
| Plays on Apple devices (Mac, iPhone, Apple TV) | Not natively, needs a separate player or conversion | Yes, native support |
| Plays on Windows | Yes, native support | Yes, with common video apps, though it's not the historical default |
| File size | Larger for the same visual quality | Smaller, more efficient compression |
| Quality | Fine, but an older, less efficient codec | Very good, though converting always re-encodes and loses a touch |
| Chapter markers / iTunes info | No | Yes, can hold chapter markers and movie info |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WMV to M4V when you want to watch an old WMV video, a home movie, screen recording, or downloaded clip, on a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, or add it to an Apple-based video library.
If you're staying on Windows and the WMV already plays fine there, there's no reason to convert it and take on an extra pass of compression.
Why not just use an online converter?
WMV files are often personal, an old home video, a recorded call, or downloaded footage you'd rather not hand over to a stranger's server just to change its format. Most online converters require uploading the whole file and then waiting for a link to download it back. Converting on your own computer keeps the video on your machine the entire time, no upload, no account, and no copy of it sitting on someone else's storage afterward.
Questions
Does converting WMV to M4V lose quality?
A little. Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding from one to the other involves a small amount of quality loss. At normal viewing sizes it's usually not something you'll notice.
Will the M4V play on my iPhone or Apple TV?
Yes. M4V is built for Apple's ecosystem, so it plays natively in the Apple TV app, on iPhone and iPad, and in QuickTime without any extra software.
Is a converted M4V protected the same way as a movie bought from iTunes?
No. iTunes purchases and rentals are wrapped in copy protection that only Apple's own apps can unlock. A file you convert yourself is just a plain video with no protection attached.
Can I convert WMV to M4V without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never travels over the internet. You could disconnect from wifi and it would still work.
Morphjet converts WMV, M4V, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
