Convert WMV to M4A
Updated Jul 2026
WMV is a Windows video format, and M4A is an audio-only format used by iTunes, the Music app, and voice memo apps. Converting WMV to M4A pulls just the audio track out of the video and saves it on its own. Doing this on your own computer means the video, and whatever it shows, never has to leave your machine.

How to convert WMV to M4A
- Open Morphjet and drag in the WMV file, or a whole folder of them.
- Choose M4A as the output format. Morphjet reads the audio track from the video automatically.
- Convert. The M4A is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
WMV vs M4A: what actually changes
| WMV | M4A | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains | Video and audio together | Audio only, no picture |
| File size | Larger, video dominates the size | Much smaller, audio alone |
| Quality | Lossy video and audio | Lossy, audio is re-encoded on export |
| Opens easily on | Windows Media Player and older Windows apps | iTunes, Apple Music, Voice Memos, iPhone, Mac |
| Good for | Watching the recording | Listening on a phone or in a music app |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert WMV to M4A when a Windows recording, like a lecture, webinar, or voiceover, only needs to be heard, and you want a small audio file you can drop into iTunes or listen to on an iPhone.
Keep the original WMV if you still need the picture, because converting to M4A throws away the video track for good.
Why not just use an online converter?
Screen recordings, webinars, and voice notes saved as WMV often carry conversations or footage you'd rather not hand to a stranger. An online converter has to receive the whole video file on its server to pull the audio out. Converting on your own computer means that recording, and everything said in it, stays on your machine the entire time.
Questions
Does converting WMV to M4A keep the video?
No. The conversion pulls out the audio track and saves it as M4A, and the video is discarded. If you need the picture too, keep the WMV.
Will the audio lose quality?
The audio is re-encoded during the conversion, so there's a small, one-time quality loss. For voice recordings, lectures, and most music it's not noticeable.
Can I play M4A files on Windows?
Yes, most current media players on Windows handle M4A fine. It's just more at home in Apple's apps, which is why people convert to it for iTunes or an iPhone.
Does the M4A keep any information about the original recording?
Basic details like duration carry over, but metadata tied to the video, such as any embedded title or timestamps, isn't guaranteed to transfer since the video track itself is dropped.
Can I convert WMV to M4A without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet extracts the audio on your own computer, so the video never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts WMV, M4A, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
