Convert WebP to GIF
Updated Jul 2026
WebP is the compact image format many websites use now, and GIF is the older format that still gets used for memes, reaction images, and simple animations because almost everything opens it. To convert WebP to GIF, open the file in a converter and export it as GIF. Doing this on your own computer means the image never has to leave your machine.

When to convert, and when not to
Convert WebP to GIF when you need to post an image or short animation somewhere that expects GIF specifically, like an old forum, a chat app, or a meme site, or when you're sharing with someone whose software can't open WebP.
Keep the WebP if quality or file size matters, since GIF's 256-color limit means photos and smooth gradients will lose detail and can look banded or speckled once converted.
Why not just use an online converter?
Converting WebP to GIF through a website means uploading your image to a server you don't control, even for something as small as a reaction image. Doing it on your own computer keeps the file local the whole time. There's no upload, no account, and nothing to wait on while a stranger's server processes it.
Questions
Does converting WebP to GIF lose quality?
Often, yes. GIF can only use 256 colors per frame, so photos and images with smooth gradients can end up banded or speckled. Simple graphics, logos, and most memes hold up fine.
Can I convert an animated WebP to an animated GIF?
Yes. The frames and timing carry over, though each frame gets reduced to GIF's 256-color limit, so animations with rich color can look a bit flatter afterward.
Is GIF still worth using if WebP is better?
WebP is usually smaller and higher quality, but GIF still opens in far more places without any fuss, which is why it's stuck around for memes and quick animations.
Does the GIF keep any metadata from the WebP?
GIF has very little room for metadata to begin with, so most of what was in the WebP, like color profile details, doesn't carry over. For these kinds of images that rarely matters.
Can I convert WebP to GIF without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file right on your computer, so it never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts WebP, GIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
