Convert TXT to ODT
Updated Jul 2026
TXT is plain, unformatted text, and ODT is the document format used by free office suites, which supports fonts, headings, and layout. To convert TXT to ODT, open the file in a converter and export it as ODT. Doing this on your own computer means the document never has to be uploaded anywhere to get converted.

How to convert TXT to ODT

- Convert. The ODT file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.
TXT vs ODT: what actually changes
| TXT | ODT | |
|---|---|---|
| Formatting | None, just characters and line breaks | Supports fonts, bold, headings, and page layout |
| File size | Very small | Larger, since it stores document structure and styling |
| Opens in | Any text editor, on any device | a free office suite, and most other word processors |
| Editable as a document | Limited, no styling to edit | Yes, with full word-processor formatting tools |
| Content preserved | N/A | Yes, all the original text carries over |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert TXT to ODT when you want to turn a plain note, draft, or exported file into a proper document you can format, add headings to, and share as a word-processing file.
Keep the TXT file if it's meant to stay plain, such as a config file, a script, or a log, since ODT adds structure that plain-text tools and pipelines won't expect.
Why not just use an online converter?
A TXT file might be a personal journal entry, private notes, or a draft you haven't shared yet. Uploading it to a browser-based converter means a stranger's server briefly holds that text. Converting it on your own computer keeps the content on your machine the entire time, with no upload step at all.
Questions
Does converting TXT to ODT lose any text?
No. All the text and line breaks carry over exactly. The conversion just wraps that plain text in a document format that supports formatting, it doesn't add or remove content.
Will my TXT file be formatted once it's an ODT?
It'll come in as plain text, usually in a default font, since TXT has no formatting to carry over. You can then add headings, bold, or styles yourself in a word processor.
Can I open an ODT file if I don't have a free office suite?
Many word processors can open ODT, and some can convert it further to a more common format like DOCX if a recipient needs that instead.
Can I convert TXT to ODT without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so the text never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts TXT, ODT, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
