Convert TXT to AZW3
Updated Jul 2026
TXT is a plain text file with no formatting, and AZW3 (Kindle Format 8) is the ebook format Kindle devices and apps use, with reflowable pages and a table of contents. To convert, open the TXT file in a converter and export it as AZW3. Doing this on your own computer keeps the manuscript off other people's servers.

How to convert TXT to AZW3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the TXT file, or a whole folder of them, that you want turned into ebooks.
- Choose AZW3 as the output format.
- Convert. The AZW3 is written next to your original, formatted to reflow and paginate on a Kindle screen, and nothing leaves your machine.
TXT vs AZW3: what actually changes
| TXT | AZW3 | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Very small, just the characters themselves | Larger, since the text is packaged into an ebook container |
| Formatting | None, just characters and line breaks | Reflowable pages and adjustable font size, plus a table of contents if the text has clear section breaks |
| Opens on Kindle | Not directly, most Kindles won't open a raw TXT file | Yes, it's the native Kindle ebook format |
| Editable in a text editor | Yes, opens in any plain text editor | No, meant for reading, not editing |
| Metadata (title, author, cover) | None | Yes, can carry a title, author, and cover image |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert TXT to AZW3 when you've got a manuscript, a downloaded book, or a long set of notes as plain text and want to read them on a Kindle with proper pagination instead of one long scroll.
Keep the TXT file if you're still writing or editing the text, since AZW3 isn't meant to be edited the way a plain text file is.
Why not just use an online converter?
A TXT file is often a manuscript, journal, or set of notes you haven't shared with anyone yet. An online ebook converter has to receive that whole file on its own server before it can hand back an AZW3. Converting on your own computer keeps the words on your machine the entire time, and you can do it with your wifi off.
Questions
Does converting TXT to AZW3 lose any text?
No. The words carry over exactly. What changes is presentation, the plain text becomes a paginated ebook with adjustable font size instead of one flat block.
Will my TXT file get chapters when it becomes an AZW3?
Only if the text already has clear breaks, like blank lines between sections. AZW3 supports chapter markers and a table of contents, but a TXT file that's just one long block of text will still read as one long section, just paginated for a Kindle screen.
Can I add a title, author, or cover to the AZW3?
Yes. AZW3 supports that metadata, so you can set a title, author, and cover image, none of which exist in a plain TXT file.
Can I convert TXT to AZW3 without uploading the file anywhere?
Yes. Morphjet converts it on your own computer, so the text never travels over the internet.
Morphjet converts TXT, AZW3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
