Convert RTF to MOBI

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

RTF is a text document format that almost any word processor can open, while MOBI is an ebook format built for older Kindle devices to display reflowable text. To convert, open the RTF in a converter and export it as MOBI. Doing this on your own computer means the document never has to be uploaded anywhere first.

How to convert RTF to MOBI

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the RTF file you want to convert, or drop in a whole folder of them at once.
  2. Choose MOBI as the output format.
  3. Convert. The MOBI file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert RTF to MOBI when you've written something in a word processor, like a manuscript, report, or long set of notes, and want to read it comfortably on an older Kindle instead of on a computer screen.

Keep the RTF if you still need to edit the text or preserve an exact layout, like specific margins or page breaks, since MOBI reflows the text for reading rather than keeping a fixed page.

Why not just use an online converter?

An RTF file might be a manuscript, a contract draft, or something personal, not something you necessarily want passing through a stranger's server just to get it onto a Kindle. Converting it on your own computer keeps the document local the entire time. An online tool means a copy of your file sits on a server you don't control, even if the site promises to delete it afterward.

Questions

Does converting RTF to MOBI lose any formatting?

The text itself converts cleanly, but MOBI is a reflowable format, so exact page layout, margins, and precise spacing from the RTF don't carry over. Basic formatting like bold, italics, and headings usually comes through fine.

Will a MOBI file still open on newer Kindles?

Yes. MOBI is an older format, but Kindle devices and the Kindle app have kept support for it, so a document you convert today will still open on current hardware.

Does the MOBI keep the title and author from the RTF?

Not automatically. RTF files usually don't carry structured title and author metadata, so the converted MOBI often just uses the file name as its title. It's worth checking that before you send it to your Kindle.

Can I convert RTF to MOBI without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet converts the file directly on your Mac or PC, so the RTF and the resulting MOBI never leave your computer. You can do it with your wifi turned off.
