Convert PDF to EPUB
Updated Jul 2026
A PDF keeps a fixed page layout everywhere, while EPUB reflows text to fit any screen, which is why e-readers prefer it. To convert, open the PDF in a converter and export it as EPUB. Doing this on your own computer keeps the document, and any metadata inside it, off outside servers.

How to convert PDF to EPUB
- Open Morphjet and drag in the PDF you want to convert, or a whole folder of them at once.
- Choose EPUB as the output format.
- Convert. The EPUB is written next to your original PDF, and nothing leaves your machine.
PDF vs EPUB: what actually changes
| EPUB | ||
|---|---|---|
| Text reflows to fit the screen | No, fixed page layout | Yes, adjusts to any screen size or font |
| File size | Larger, especially if scanned or image-heavy | Usually smaller, since it's mostly text and images |
| Opens everywhere | Yes, nearly any device or browser | Yes, on most e-readers and reading apps |
| Layout fidelity | Exact, preserves the original page design | Good for plain text, but columns, tables, and precise layouts can shift |
| Keeps document metadata (title, author) | Yes | Usually, though it can be incomplete on complex or scanned PDFs |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert PDF to EPUB when you want to read a document on an e-reader or phone, with text that reflows and resizes instead of a page you have to pinch and zoom to see.
Keep the PDF if the document depends on precise layout, like a form, a scanned page, or something with charts and side-by-side columns, since EPUB conversion can reshuffle that content.
Why not just use an online converter?
PDFs often carry metadata such as the author's name, the software used to create the file, and sometimes leftover comments or edit history. An online converter would receive all of that along with the document itself. Converting on your own computer keeps the file, and everything embedded in it, on your machine.
Questions
Does converting PDF to EPUB lose quality?
Plain text converts cleanly, but PDFs with complex layouts, tables, or multiple columns don't always translate perfectly, since EPUB reflows text instead of keeping a fixed page. A scanned PDF that's really just images of pages won't gain reflow unless it's been through text recognition first.
Will the EPUB work on a Kindle?
Most e-readers open EPUB directly. Kindle is the main exception, since it's built around its own formats, though current Kindle devices and apps can accept EPUB files sent to them directly.
Does the EPUB keep the PDF's metadata?
Usually. Title, author, and creation date typically carry over, though heavily formatted or scanned PDFs can lose some of it in the conversion.
Can I convert PDF to EPUB without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never leaves your computer or touches an outside server.
What happens to images and formatting in the PDF?
Images generally carry over fine. Formatting tied to a fixed page, like side-by-side columns or exact text placement, gets reflowed to fit the reading screen instead of staying pixel for pixel the same.
