Convert OGG to MP3
Updated Jul 2026
OGG is a compressed audio format popular with games and open codecs, while MP3 is the format almost every player, car stereo, and phone can open. To convert OGG to MP3, open the file in a converter and export it as MP3. Doing this on your own computer means the audio never has to be uploaded anywhere first.

How to convert OGG to MP3
- Open Morphjet and drag in the OGG files you want to convert, or point it at a whole folder.
- Choose MP3 as the output format, and pick a bitrate if you want to balance size against quality.
- Convert. The MP3s are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
OGG vs MP3: what actually changes
| OGG | MP3 | |
|---|---|---|
| Opens everywhere | Limited, mainly games and Android | Yes, universal support |
| File size | Smaller at the same perceived quality | Slightly larger for equivalent quality |
| Quality | Good, efficient compression | Good, with a small extra loss on re-encoding |
| Metadata (tags, cover art) | Yes | Yes, usually carries over |
| Common uses | Games, streaming, open codecs | Music players, cars, general playback |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert OGG to MP3 when you need to play a game's sound file or an open-codec track in a car stereo, an older phone, or any app that doesn't recognize OGG.
Keep the OGG original if it already plays fine where you need it, since OGG is already compressed and converting it to MP3 re-encodes lossy audio into more lossy audio, which never improves quality.
Why not just use an online converter?
Online audio converters typically require uploading your file to a server before handing back a download, which means a copy of your audio sits somewhere outside your control, even briefly. Converting on your own computer skips that step entirely. The OGG file goes in, the MP3 comes out, and none of it travels over the internet.
Questions
Does converting OGG to MP3 lose quality?
Some, yes. Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding from OGG to MP3 means compressing audio that's already been compressed once. At a reasonably high bitrate the difference is hard to hear, but it's not a lossless process.
Will the MP3 keep the song title, artist, and cover art?
Usually. Most tags embedded in the OGG carry over to the MP3 during conversion, but it's worth checking a converted file if metadata matters to you.
Why do some files come as OGG instead of MP3?
OGG is a royalty-free format that many games, streaming apps, and Android tools use by default. MP3 is older and more universally supported, which is usually why people convert to it.
Can I convert OGG to MP3 without uploading the file?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never has to leave your computer. You can do it with no internet connection at all.
Morphjet converts OGG, MP3, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
