Convert MPEG to 3GP

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

MPEG is a standard video format used for DVDs and broadcast, while 3GP is a compact format built for older mobile phones with limited storage and slow connections. To convert, open the MPEG file in a converter and export it as 3GP. Doing this on your own computer means the footage never leaves your machine.

How to convert MPEG to 3GP

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the MPEG file you want to convert, or a whole folder of them at once.
  2. Choose 3GP as the output format.
  3. Convert. The 3GP file is written right next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert MPEG to 3GP if you need to play a video on an old feature phone, or in some legacy software that still expects that specific mobile format, since 3GP was built to load quickly on slow connections and limited phone storage.

Keep the MPEG original if you plan to watch the video on a computer, TV, or a phone from the last decade, since 3GP throws away resolution and detail those devices don't need it to lose.

Why not just use an online converter?

Video files are often personal, whether it's home movies, old recordings, or something you'd rather not hand over to a random website. Uploading an MPEG to an online converter means sending that footage to a stranger's server and waiting for it to come back. Converting on your own computer keeps the video, and whatever is in it, on your machine the whole time.

Questions

Does converting MPEG to 3GP lose quality?

Yes, more than most conversions. 3GP is a low-bitrate, low-resolution format by design, so it strips out detail the MPEG had. If the MPEG was already fairly compressed, this loss is more noticeable.

Can I still play 3GP files today?

On a computer with the right software, usually yes. On modern phones, rarely, since most manufacturers moved on from 3GP over a decade ago.

Why would I still need 3GP in 2026?

It mostly comes up with older feature phones, some embedded devices, or legacy systems that were never updated to expect anything newer. For everyday viewing there's rarely a reason to choose it.

Can I convert MPEG to 3GP without uploading the file?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so the video never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
