Video conversion

Convert MP4 to OGG

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

MP4 is a video format, and OGG (Ogg Vorbis) is an audio-only format, so converting MP4 to OGG means pulling out the audio track and leaving the video behind. Open the MP4 in a converter, choose OGG, and export just the sound. Doing this on your own computer means the video never has to leave your machine to get the audio out of it.

How to convert MP4 to OGG

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the MP4 file, or a whole folder of them, if you're pulling audio from several videos at once.
  2. Choose OGG as the output format. Morphjet extracts the audio track and drops the video.
  3. Convert. The OGG file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert MP4 to OGG when you only need the sound from a video, like pulling a song, a voiceover, or game audio out of a video file, and you want a small, audio-only file instead of the whole video.

Keep the MP4 if you still need the picture, since converting to OGG throws the video away for good.

Why not just use an online converter?

Pulling audio out of a video usually means picking a site, uploading the whole file, waiting, and hoping it deletes it afterward. That video might contain a voice, a face, or a room you'd rather not send to a stranger's server just to get an OGG out of it. Morphjet extracts the audio locally, so the video and the sound both stay on your computer the entire time.

Questions

Does converting MP4 to OGG lose quality?

The audio gets re-encoded, so there's some quality loss, but at a reasonable bitrate it's hard to notice for speech or music. If the original audio was already low quality, OGG can't add detail back.

What happens to the video when I convert MP4 to OGG?

It's discarded. OGG is an audio-only format, so the conversion keeps the sound and drops the picture entirely. Keep the original MP4 if you might want the video later.

Will the OGG file play on my phone or in my browser?

Most non-Apple software, browsers, and games play OGG without any extra setup. Some Apple apps need a plugin or a different format, so check before you rely on it there.

Can I convert MP4 to OGG without uploading the video anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet extracts and converts the audio right on your computer, so the video file never has to be sent anywhere.

Does the OGG keep any metadata from the video?

Basic audio tags can carry over, but video-specific metadata like resolution or camera info doesn't apply once the video is gone. There's nothing sensitive left to worry about since the picture itself isn't in the file.
