Convert M4V to WMA

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

M4V is Apple's iTunes video format, and WMA is a Windows audio format. Converting M4V to WMA pulls out just the audio track and discards the picture, saving it as a WMA file. It's useful when you only need the sound, and it can be done entirely on your own computer, with no uploading required.

How to convert M4V to WMA

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the M4V file, or a whole folder of them at once.
  2. Choose WMA as the output. Since WMA is audio only, Morphjet keeps the sound and drops the video track.
  3. Convert. The WMA file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

When to convert, and when not to

Convert M4V to WMA when you only care about the sound, like pulling the audio from a lecture, interview, or concert recording so you can listen to it on a Windows PC or in Windows Media Player.

Keep the M4V if you still want to watch the video, since converting to WMA throws away the picture for good, there's no way to get it back afterward.

Why not just use an online converter?

M4V files, especially ones bought from the iTunes Store, are personal media tied to your account. Sending one through an online converter means it lands on a stranger's server before you get anything back. Converting on your own computer keeps the video on your machine the whole time, and you don't need an internet connection to do it.

Questions

Does converting M4V to WMA keep the video?

No. WMA is an audio-only format, so the video track is discarded during conversion and only the sound is kept.

Will the audio quality suffer?

There's a small amount of loss, since both M4V's audio and WMA use lossy compression. For speech or casual listening it's not noticeable.

Can I convert an M4V bought from the iTunes Store?

If it's copy-protected, it can't be converted until that protection is removed. M4V files you created yourself, say from exporting a video, don't have this restriction.

Does the WMA keep the title and other info?

Basic tags like title and artist usually carry over, but chapter markers and artwork from the original M4V typically don't.

Can this be done without uploading the file anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally, so it never has to leave your computer, even with the internet off.
