Convert M4V to 3GP

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

M4V is the video format iTunes and Apple's video apps use, and 3GP is an older, heavily compressed format built for early mobile phones and MMS messages. To convert, open the M4V in a converter and export it as 3GP. Doing this on your own computer keeps the footage off outside servers, though iTunes purchases or rentals with copy protection can't be converted at all.

How to convert M4V to 3GP

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the M4V file you want to convert, or a whole folder of them.
  2. Choose 3GP as the output format.
  3. Convert. The 3GP file is written next to your original, and nothing leaves your machine.

M4V vs 3GP: what actually changes

Typical resolutionCan hold HDCapped low, often 320x240 or smaller

Copy protectionPurchased or rented iTunes titles can be DRM lockedNo DRM support, protected files can't be converted to it

When to convert, and when not to

Convert M4V to 3GP when you need a video for an old feature phone, an embedded system, or an app that specifically expects the 3GP format and won't take anything newer.

Keep the M4V if you're watching on a modern phone, computer, or TV, since 3GP's tiny file size comes from a real drop in resolution and quality you can't get back.

Why not just use an online converter?

M4V files are often personal, home movies, screen recordings, or clips exported from other apps, not just store-bought titles. Upload one to an online converter and that footage sits on a server you don't control until someone gets around to deleting it. Converting on your own computer keeps the video, and whatever it shows, on your machine the whole time.

Questions

Does converting M4V to 3GP lose quality?

Yes, noticeably. 3GP was designed for tiny screens and slow mobile networks, so the conversion shrinks the resolution and compresses much harder than M4V does. It's a real drop, not just a format change.

Can I convert an M4V I bought or rented from iTunes?

Usually not. Movies and shows purchased or rented through iTunes are typically copy-protected, and no converter, on-device or online, can get around that. Home videos, screen recordings, and M4V files exported from other apps aren't protected and convert normally.

Why would anyone still want 3GP in 2026?

Mostly for compatibility with old feature phones, embedded devices, or specific software that only accepts that format. It's uncommon, but the need hasn't fully disappeared.

Will the 3GP keep the original audio in sync?

Yes, a proper conversion keeps audio and video aligned. What changes is the resolution and compression level, not the timing.

Can I convert M4V to 3GP without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. A desktop app does the conversion on your own computer, so the file never travels over the internet.
