Audio conversion
Convert FLAC to WAV
Updated Jul 2026
FLAC is a compressed but lossless audio format, and WAV is the uncompressed format many recording and editing programs expect. To convert FLAC to WAV, open the file in a converter and export it as WAV. Since both formats are lossless, you lose no audio quality, and doing it on your own computer keeps your music library off other people's servers.

- Choose WAV as the output format.
- Convert. The WAV files are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
FLAC vs WAV: what actually changes
| FLAC | WAV | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Smaller, roughly half the size of WAV for the same audio | Larger, uncompressed |
| Quality | Lossless | Lossless, identical audio data |
| Compatibility | Good, but not read by some older hardware and basic editing software | Very broad, the default format for CD burning, DAWs, and older audio gear |
| Metadata (tags) | Yes, artist, album, and track info are stored reliably | Limited, some players and devices ignore or drop WAV tags |
| Good for archiving | Yes, same quality in less space | Yes, but takes up more room for no quality gain |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert FLAC to WAV when you need to import audio into software or hardware that doesn't read FLAC, such as older recording gear, some DAWs, or a CD burner.
Keep the FLAC if you're just storing or listening to music, since it holds the exact same audio quality in about half the file size.
Why not just use an online converter?
Your music collection can say a lot about you, and some audio files carry embedded tags with personal notes or purchase details. Uploading FLAC files to an online converter sends that library to a stranger's server. Converting on your own computer means your tracks never leave your machine.
Questions
Does converting FLAC to WAV lose quality?
No. FLAC is a lossless format, meaning it stores the exact same audio data as WAV, just compressed. Converting between the two is a lossless process with no quality change either way.
Why does the WAV file end up so much bigger?
FLAC compresses the audio data to save space without losing anything. WAV stores it uncompressed, so converting to WAV typically makes the file roughly double the size for the identical audio.
Will my track and album info carry over to the WAV file?
Not reliably. FLAC stores tags in a well-supported way, but WAV's tagging is less standardized, and some players or devices won't show artist, album, or track name after conversion.
Why would I need WAV instead of FLAC?
Some recording software, older audio hardware, and CD burning tools expect WAV and don't read FLAC at all. WAV is also the common format professional audio editing tools default to.
Can I convert FLAC to WAV without uploading my music?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the files on your own computer, so your music never travels over the internet. You can do it with your wifi off.
Morphjet converts FLAC, WAV, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
