Camera RAW conversion
Convert CR2 to GIF
Updated Jul 2026
CR2 is Canon's RAW photo format with the full sensor data from the camera. GIF is a simple, universal image format built for graphics and animations, not photos. Open the CR2 in a converter and export it as GIF. Doing this on your own computer keeps the RAW file off other people's servers.

How to convert CR2 to GIF
- Open Morphjet and drag in the CR2 file, or a whole folder of them, that you want to convert.
- Choose GIF as the output format.
- Convert. The GIFs are written next to your originals, and nothing leaves your machine.
CR2 vs GIF: what actually changes
| CR2 | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| File size | Very large, often 20 to 40MB per photo | Small, but bigger than a comparable JPEG of the same photo |
| Quality | Lossless, the full sensor data | Limited to 256 colors, with visible banding on photos |
| Opens everywhere | No, needs Canon or RAW-compatible software | Yes, universal support |
| Transparency | No | Yes, though only fully on or off, no partial transparency |
| Keeps metadata (EXIF) | Yes, camera settings, date, and lens data | No, GIF has no field for it |
| Editable after the fact | Yes, exposure and white balance can still be adjusted | No, changes are baked in |
When to convert, and when not to
Convert CR2 to GIF when you want a quick, simple version of a photo, say for a meme, a forum post, or a small web graphic, that opens on any device without special software.
Keep the CR2 original if you might still want to adjust exposure or white balance later, since GIF's 256-color palette locks in the image and throws that editing room away.
Why not just use an online converter?
A CR2 file carries the camera settings, date, and sometimes location from the shot, embedded right in the file. Send that RAW file to an online converter and all of that travels to their servers along with the photo, whether or not you meant to share it. Converting on your own computer keeps the RAW file, and everything recorded inside it, on your machine the whole time.
Questions
Does converting CR2 to GIF lose quality?
Yes, and it's a bigger drop than converting to JPEG. GIF is limited to 256 colors, so photos with smooth gradients, like skies or skin tones, show visible banding once you export.
Will the GIF keep the photo's metadata?
No. GIF has no field for EXIF data, so the camera model, exposure settings, and date recorded in the CR2 don't carry over. Keep the original CR2 if you need that information.
Can I still edit the photo after converting to GIF?
Not in the way you can with the CR2. RAW files hold the full sensor data, so you can adjust exposure or white balance after the fact. Once it's a GIF, those adjustments are baked in and the color palette is fixed.
Do I need special software to open a CR2 file?
Usually, yes. CR2 is Canon's RAW format, and most photo viewers and non-Canon devices can't open it directly, which is part of why people convert it to a common format like GIF.
Can I convert CR2 to GIF without uploading it anywhere?
Yes. A desktop app like Morphjet converts the file locally on your computer, so the RAW photo and everything embedded in it never leave your machine.
Morphjet converts CR2, GIF, and 1,800+ other formats, all on your machine. Launching this July.
