Convert AVIF to PSD

Updated Jul 2026

Short answer

AVIF is the compressed image format many websites now use, and PSD is the layered file format Photoshop and similar editors use for design work. To convert AVIF to PSD, open the AVIF file and export it as PSD, which flattens it into a single editable layer. Doing this on your own computer means the image never leaves your machine.

How to convert AVIF to PSD

  1. Open Morphjet and drag in the AVIF image you want to convert, or a whole folder of them at once.
  2. Choose PSD as the output format.
  3. Convert. The PSD is written next to your original, opens straight in Photoshop or a compatible editor, and nothing leaves your machine.

AVIF vs PSD: what actually changes

AVIFPSD
Opens everywhereNo, needs a recent browser or app that supports itNo, needs Photoshop or compatible editing software
File sizeSmall, highly compressedMuch larger, since it stores uncompressed pixel data
QualityLossy, some detail discarded when it was createdLossless from this point forward, but can't restore detail the AVIF already lost
TransparencyYesYes
LayersNo, single flattened imageYes, though a converted file starts as one layer until you add more
MetadataCan carry someYes, carries over

When to convert, and when not to

Convert AVIF to PSD when you need to open a web image in Photoshop or a similar editor to retouch it, add layers, or drop it into a larger design.

Keep the AVIF if you're just displaying the image on a website or in an app, since PSD files are far larger and most viewers can't open them at all.

Why not just use an online converter?

Design work often involves unreleased product shots, client mockups, or personal photos you don't want sitting on someone else's server. An online converter has to upload the AVIF to do its job, and you have no way to know what happens to it after. Converting on your own computer means the image goes straight from your drive into the PSD, without ever touching the internet.

Questions

Does converting AVIF to PSD lose any quality?

No further quality is lost in the conversion itself, since PSD is lossless. But AVIF is already a compressed format, so any detail it discarded when it was created is gone for good, and the PSD can't bring it back.

Will the PSD have layers?

Not automatically. AVIF is a single flat image, so the PSD starts as one layer too. You can add more layers once it's open in your editor.

What can open a PSD file?

Photoshop is the obvious one, but a few other image editors can open PSD files too. If you just need to view it, you'll likely need dedicated software, since PSD isn't something a browser or default image viewer handles.

Does the PSD keep the AVIF's metadata?

Yes, PSD carries metadata forward, so information like copyright or camera details stored in the AVIF is preserved.

Can I convert AVIF to PSD without uploading it anywhere?

Yes. Morphjet converts the file on your own computer, so it never has to leave your machine or pass through anyone else's server.
